Hope all is OK Michael with the hurricane.
Yes its fine - thank you. Other than heavy rain Martinique was not badly affected. Boat seems to be fine and I'm back in France!
Great to see you come in to my home waters and port, and see and appreciate the facilities. Great video and narration as ever. Looking forward to the next 🙂
Thank you Rob. Glad you enjoyed the Video. The Solent is indeed very spécial! There are more including a visit to Beaulieu at ua-cam.com/channels/CHwNBRMwKc-aYYdKzYON4Q.html

Thanks Rob. It was indeed a compilation of 3 episodes with some edits. Thank you
Brilliant! 👏
Thank you Serge. Glad it was useful
This is very informative. Thank you!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I’d reckon it was a very bad situation when it all happened. All the best! Angel We leave the heavy lifting to our American friends and do care for the Anker beers.🍺 stereotypes must be full filled 😂
Thanks' for watching. Yes it was quite an experience but we got away with it!
I am a rtd. airline Captain and that or a fire was the biggest threat for me. you did exceptional well all the best
@@6stringks Thank you. I confess fire scares me more than pirates. With pirates it is possible to keep calm and reduce the tension. With fire I suspect the only thing to do is to jump in the life raft and get as far away from the boat as quickly as possible! Possibly the other way round for you... Good fire suppressant systems. Pirates... Very difficult in the air!
Yes indeed, still an uncontrollable fire leaves you with a max. of 20 mins (they say) I would land in 5 if I can…Hijackers are not nice to have either. Decision making tho is always interesting. Probably a lot of times it comes down to do the „least wrong thing” in the time available- rather than striving for a perfect decision and refrain from jumping into the first solution and stay as calm as possible. I get carried away. Now I have to learn sailing first as I only had motor boats so far. All the best and always smooth sailing, Angel
You need a ICC certificate to charter a bare boat anywhere in Europe
I think that depends on your proven experience. I have made a circumnavigation and sailed some 58,000 miles in the Atlantic and Pacific and never had any problems chartering... The ICC shows a bare minimum of experience or knowledge which the charter companies will probably accept.
Very enjoyable.
Thank you Paul. Glad you liked it
I am so proud of our military. I loved the way you referred to them as “The Yanks”. Haha I think the US military and the British Military make a great combination when working together. 🇺🇸🇬🇧
I use 'Yanks' with affection ... they are our cousins even if we don't quite speak the same language.. Nothing wrong with NATO... either.
@@SailingGently I meant no harm when you referred to the US military as “Yanks”, I just haven’t heard that in a long time and I know you meant no harm either. I would have mentioned Germany and NATO too but I wrote my comment before NATO showed up. As for Germany, I think it’s great that we have all come together as allies and moved past what happened in the early 40’s. I know this is off-topic from your post but I just wanted to share with you my feelings and I’m sure you feel the same way. Since social media began, everybody has become friendly with each other online and in some cases physically too. Here in the states we were always taught that Russia was the enemy and that’s still true today so as a whole we disliked (or hated) Russia. Personally I have become very good friends with people in Russia, and I realized that they are the same as you and I. Our government teaches us differently. When war broke out between Russia and Ukraine, it really botherd me because it wasn’t the Russian people looking for war, It was the Russian government that started it. Everybody lived as friendly neighbors until one person decided to invade his neighboring country. Sometime I wish that before there was any war the citizens could have the right to vote on it. I know this is a little far-fetched but those people that we have become friendly with, are they now supposed to be our enemies? I hope you can understand what I’m getting at in. It’s kind of hard to explain online without writing a book. Take care and I’m so happy that nobody was injured or killed in the pirate attack on your boat.
@@Naplesfrank154 Frank we are like minded, although Biden makes me nervous with his handling of Putin - in the end there has to be a negotiated settlement

Thanks. Much more to this than I expected.
It is still an interesting subject Kev, despite the arrival of GPS...
What a great video. I have watched all of your videos, I think I have got 3 left :). would you kindly do one on crossing the pacific? I know you have few on the panama canal and the french Polynesia. maybe you could do one on the difference between the Atlantic and pacific crossing. point of departure, timing, navigating the doldrums and the small islands you could stop at before reaching the French Polynesia. I can not find many videos on sailing to Pitcairn Islands, Henderson island or even Easter Island. I suspect it is due to anchoring, I am not sure.
Fathi hi, So pleased you found Atlantic video useful... Fabulous videos Michael. I’ve binge watched most of them. A great alternative to the sea of artificial, overproduced and clickbait sailing vlogs we see today. Cheers from Australia.
Thank you Bob So glad you liked them... Michael
We should aprecuate your informative effort. I am thinking is it more inexoensive to use the canals on my way to cyprus from nederlands? Or go around spain and the Gibraltar ?
For sure the canals are much cheaper and easier than the windward slog up the Portuguese coast. Shorter distance as well. At chalon keep going up the Saone north then branch off through the Ardèche into Belgium and eventually the big sea lock in Maastrich. (Spelling sorry!)
Super helpful, very generous of you thanks. Do you happen to know anything about going onward east to the Black Sea - I was considering going as far as Varna in Bulgaria. Paul
Paul hi, Sorry, I really can't help. The Black sea was one of the places I would have liked to explore but never got round to! Michael
Did this journey in a 22ft boat in 1988 from Calais to the Med and back. A really memorable journey, well worth doing.
Well done Teti, I have enjoyed the route so much. Glad I brought back good memories
VERY DETAILED in My Opinion. Thank You!

Absolutely brilliant vlog so professionally delivered. Thank you - have also sent you an email.
Glad you liked it Graham. I have replied to your email
did you ever consider the third company ( name i cannot remember ) but they allowed a crew member to stay onboard for the atlantic crossing , their vessel submerged and you just sailed in , anyone know the name ??
There is a 3rd company Called Bas Bos Logistics whose web site is American but are actually a Dutch owned shipping company. DYT are also a subsidiary of a huge Dutch shipping company and like Peters and May offer deck cargo for boats but also have 2 semi-submersibles where I think the boats skipper can sleep on the ship during the cerossin if, if cabin space is available and at an extra charge...
Interesting. It has all changed since 1979 when I did the 3 month trip from Calais, Paris where I spenta week tied up on the left bank opposite Notre Dame. Probably not allowed anymore. Canal de Borgogne. Lyon. The river was not canalised for the next 30k about. Memory is vague but it was a fast passage and were advised to have a pilot on board. Not easy to findcat that time as the commercial traffic and I had been held up for 2 weeks because of the lack of water in the river. Avignon and the canal du Rhone a Sete through the Camargue. It was all fantastic and slow. 36ft timber yawl with 8hp Stuart aturner petrol engine. Its all I could afford at 25. Now I have a much better boat. An S&S 48 and I have been in Asia for 15 years. Its wonderful.
The good old days! I think my first was around 1985 ish and I parked up one night under the Eiffel tower and somewhere else on the other bank... Back then almost every lock had a lockmaster operating it... These days they are virtually all DIY automated locks.. I think the Avignon to Sete route is still beautiful and little used although Port Napoleon and Port st Louis are huge marina and boatyard complexes. Lucky you to be in Asia... I enjoyed Comodo, Bali and Phuket enormously and the courtesy mobo in Port Klang ? run by the yacht club...
@@SailingGentlythanks for the update. I feel like Asia does not have the same problems these days as europe. It has others. Lol. Life is what you make it. Enjoy
This is something I have always wanted to do. I have a Jennau 12.3m Sunfizz (but built in the USA under the brand; O'day). Currently in Thailand on the hard. Very interesting.
Well Phil if you ever get back up here in the North the Canals are a superb experience. I didn't know Jeanneau were O'day's - lucky you to be sailing down there... I loved Phuket!
Great book and video many thanks. Saves hours of reviewing impossible ports or tides.. Biarritz holds the EU surfing champs in the summer great town but would say its scary.
I always used to overnight from la Rochelle to Northern Spain... in the end easier than working the tides..
Can listen to you all day Michael, between your good self and windhippie, every time i want to waste money on gear or an excuse not to go out you guys reset the need and inspire. Faced with same issue now, boat is only 45min away but weather restricts so would i get more use with 3-4 solid weeks a year and leave her down south or west somewhere for next years while i work to retire and go on the loop
Interesting Richie, I have had the same issue...I used the boat less when it was 20 minutes away than I do now it's 2,000 miles away!
I’ve been researching and have found varying info what do you believe is max draft that can be taken through canal system, draft is 1.8 but assume that’s in salt water not fresh
Domonic hi 1.8 metres on the MAIN canals is around the max but because heavily laden commercial barges frequently exceed this in the middle of the main canals its more.. The problem with being on or near the limit is this depth is less close to the bank when you want to park up overnight. Lots of boats go through at 1.8 provided there is not a drought
@@SailingGently thank you
looks like a dream
Yes it really is! I have enjoyed my passages up and down the canals so much!
Great guide Michael, hope all is well. Love WP1 22d to home... Been giving myself a hard time for not chasing miles and "offshore" but loved the slow way south guide. Eventually you will hit a pot or do some damage on your own at night. Safe Watch
Richie I agree... Messing about in boats should be just fun... And knowing ones limitations helps!
@@SailingGently Grabbed a brace of the books, if you were going to leave the boat on west coast of spain for the winter and get the hull painted, and hour form a usefll airport or high speed train etc with a view to maderia or canaries where would you rest up Micheal?
Difficult.. Coruna or Bayonne and get the train to the ferries around St Sebastian... Or Lisbon in portugal... Lots of marinas and nearer airports
Thoroughly enjoyed that and glad it turned out sort of alright.
Thank you Stephen. Glad you enjoyed it...
Thank you, this was wonderful. Interesting also to see the motorboat also being shipped. I will follow this journey you are doing. Perhaps one day i may do an atlantic crossing if ever i buy a under 35’ boat. And i agree, age has some benefits but given the option i know we would love to not age after a chosen younger year.
As you are in your 60’s, i was wondering about the maintenance of a sailboat and the need to bring the mast down and up occasionally. I love the idea of “free” nautical miles and the beauty of sailing. But as an “older” guy without any boating experience (except an online educational course) the reality of a cabin cruiser seems much more convenient although more expensive per nautical mile for fuel. Would you sail or motor if you began your boating journey in your late 60’s? Enjoy the Caribbean, like you said you only live once.
These days I pay people to fix things rather than doing it myself. The cost of running a motor boat is horrendous and to be safe you need 2 engines. Sailboats costs are generally far less. I would only go for a mobo on rivers or lakes. 60 is young to take up sailing... why not do a short course with a sailing school and see how it goes...
Hi Micheal,my reply to your msg from Guadalupe,re-chandelry. Please fwd by email.
I hope to be back in 4 or 5 days - and will show you picture.... of shop advert... will try to send pic again by email
how many ships could a ship ship ship if a ship ship could ship ships?
Lots.. 20+. Depends on size of ship and size of boats. .. I guess
Well. They do say “ you’re only young once “ happy days.
I'm told this is not a rehearsal!
This was so interesting. I will be having a look at all your work. Thank you.
Glad you liked the video Phillip
Just stumbled across this video which was very interesting, looking forward to more from the Caribbean.
More to come! Now looking at Guadeloupe as a base
Your encounter with the submarine reminded me of a friend of mine, who collided with a British Navy submarine conning tower in a main channel of the Solent. The incident became the first prosecution by the Navy of a civilian vessel in over one hundred years. He reasonably argued that the submarine was submerged, so he was blaimless but the Navy response was that it does not make mistakes at sea. 😊. . His boats just had a scratch but was billed a few hundred thousand pounds in damages, by the Navy, which his insurer settled. Yet one more reason why insurance is increasingly hard to procure.
I do wonder about our navy sometimes Stephen.. A frigate bashed into a german freighter in the channel, another hit coral (whilst anchored) in the great barrier reef, I was in Alderney when a fast patrol boat hit the harbor wall at speed .... and one managed to drift into tower bridge trying to turn round... All not very Hornblower or Nelson or Aubry???
@SailingGently When you sail down the Pacific Notth American coast (from Vancouver to Mexico), you encounter US Warships frequently, engaged in various training exercises. On C16 they will hail you, requesting you keep clear of them.. The impression I got was that the radio operators were barely older than 17 and the officers not much older 😀. So, the Royal Navy is not unique.
Never understood why marinas do not offer opional (or even compulsory) 3rd party cover by the day (or duration of ones visit). That is standard for storage lockers (unless you can prove you have existing cover) so why dont marinas offer the same?
Probably too late when you've bashed into something on the way in before checking n at the capitainary!
Insurance is becoming a big issue for cruisers. My Canadian insurer would not cover me for the US, and my US insurer wouldn't cover me for Mexico. Was able to buy third-party cover (only) in Mexico for Mexican waters only, and since then, i haven't had any cover. Moreover, i have not met any other long-distance cruiser in the last year who has any cover, either. That's a big issue for people with significant sums invested in their vessels but those of us with older boats are more relaxed about it.
It is a problem... I toss up between dodgy insurers offering full cover at the same price as established insurers.. and just 3rd party.. All mine exclude US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico
Funny that you mention that the English Channel ports are too crowded and that you are seeking the relative quiet of Martinique. Here in the (very quiet) Pacific side of Panama, cruisers grumble about the Caribbean being too crowded 🤔.
Actually it is crowded here but there a thousands of anchorages and you can normally find a place to drop the pick! I think GPS and plotters has made boating easier and now all you need is dosh! But it is a wonderful pastime... I loved the Pacific and envy you!
@SailingGently I would agree with you but have also witnessed a lot of cruisers give up the lifestyle, as they hadn't figured on the amount of maintenance boats require (particularly in the warmer climates). Not everyone has the necessary appetite or skills and money only gets you so far.
Ultimately its boring as well... I think that's why there are so many UA-camrs and if its not boring its frightening! Running costs are so high I agree... I have just replaced my furler as it jammed 2 days ago in 30 knots with all the genny out. That was challenging and the cost frightening!
@SailingGently The deal I have with my wife is that she joins me for the passages but I do the maintenance (which she finds boring) on my own. So far it is about 50:50 (maintenance : cruisjng).
Thanks for this. I have been looking at shipping my yacht across for some time now, but I had no idea of the cost. So it might have to remain a pipe dream. Fair Winds.
Tony the prices change all the time.. keep asking for quotes from all 3 main shippers. I think 12k is a possible price..
I’d be interested to know what the atmosphere in the marina you’re moored up in is like? Is it friendly? Are there many living on their boats? Do the Brits tend to stick together? Are there many Americans there? Are there many French there? What type of people do you encounter whilst living in the marina?
Great mix of friendly people although its 80% French. All the trades people and staff speak English. Lots of Canadian and American boats and always a few Brits... Not many permanent UK people but a flow of visiting boats... Some private french boat owners speak english but that's the exception! In St Lucia 25 miles south everyone speaks or is english and the same with Antigua 150 miles north
I enjoyed this vid just as much as I did last year, even though i knew who got the girl in ghe end. Why dont you let out your place in France and just live aboard?
I have to get off the boat sometimes... Yes it was a compilation of 3 or 4 episodes edited down... Thanks for sticking with it!
I certainly understand your desire to escape the overcrowding here in Europe....
To be fair Benny, the marinas are crowded and the more popular anchorages but there is always space and so many places... It's still easy to find idyllic spots
Sounds a great idea - enjoy the sunshine. Very informative video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it Capt Paul and found it useful
that was absolutely fascinating. I admire your perseverance and energy. Have a wonderful time in your new paradise.
Thank you Maesy Actually I need a 'mission' and so far this one has worked out OK. Going to look at Guadeloupe as an alternative

Your right Henry - sharing the fun of sailing is the way to go! So pleased you liked the video
Great video, best of luck with trip, if you don’t mind me asking ball park per meter how much was the shipping? Thanks in advance
Richie hi, it was £18,000 but it varies enormously depending on world freight rates
@@SailingGently suppose that’s a 40ft container with all the handling. I assume it’s 10k in labour alone to have it delivered on keel so not bad if all works out. Was going to say you probably need more solar and lithium but if you have a permanent berth no need. Have an awesome time. Gives one confidence time is not a constant
Yes how much did it cost to ship your 323?
@@wdahlstrom it was £18,000 but it varies enormously depending on world freight rates
Not quite like that... The shipping companies select a route and if enough boats are interested they charter a ship... The price per boat seems to depend on that charter price which depends on world trade shipping prices at that time.. Prices when I started were 12,000 but then came covid and the hike in oil and shipping costs
